Pedestrian struck, seriously injured in Harwich

HARWICH - A pedestrian was struck and seriously injured in Harwich just after 5 p.m. Harwich Fire Chief Norman Clarke Jr., apparently witnessed the incident on Route 28 by the Harwichport Post Office and called it in.
 
The victim, Ed Lilley of Harwich, was rushed to Barnstable Municipal Airport to meet a MedFlight helicopter which flew him to Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
 
Harwich Police are investigating the incident.

Two-vehicle crash in West Barnstable


WEST BARNSTABLE - Barnstable Police are investigating this two-vehicle crash in West Barnstable about 4:30 p.m. The crash happened at the intersection of Route 132 and Route 6A. Several people were evaluated but no serious injuries were reported. Traffic was slowed for about 45 minutes until the scene was cleared.

Driver in Chatham crash accused of OUI bath salts

CHATHAM - Chatham Police have updated CWN on yesterday's rollover crash. They report that pn Tuesday January 01, 2013 at 05:05pm, Officers from the Chatham Police Department were investigating a report of a vehicle operations complaint in the Town of Harwich with information that the vehicle in question was travelling towards the Town of Chatham.  Information received was that the vehicle was a pick-up truck operating at excessive speeds without headlights.

While traveling west on Rt. 28, (Main Street), at Evergreen Road, Chatham Police observed a red pick-up truck operating eastbound at a high rate of speed with no headlights.

Chatham Police then received a report of a motor vehicle crash in the area of Main Street (Rt. 28) and Victoria Drive.  Upon arrival, Officers observed a red 2004 Chevy pick-up that had left the roadway and was on its side. 

The vehicle operator was identified as:  Kenneth B. NICKERSON, (age 49), from Chatham.  Mr. Nickerson suffered minor injuries and was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Chatham Fire Rescue.

During the investigation, Mr. Nickerson told police that he was under the influence of “Bath Salts”.  Mr. Nickerson has been charged with operating under the influence (fourth offense), operating negligently to endanger, speeding and other motor vehicle infractions.

The crash was investigated by Chatham Police Officer William S. Little, who is also assigned to the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council’s Crash Reconstruction Team.

Police raid New Year’s Eve teen drinking party
SANDWICH
- According to the Sandwich Police Department, on New Year’s Eve at approximately 11:00 p.m. Officer Adam Trayner observed two teenage males running down the middle of Cotuit road. Officer Trayner noted that one of the males was holding two cans of beer.
 
A brief encounter with the individuals and subsequent investigation revealed a large underage drinking party located at 284 Cotuit Road. Additional officers responded to the residence and located approximately 35 teens ranging in age from 17 to 19 and a large amount of alcohol present in the residence. It was obvious that several of those present were in various stages of intoxication. Officers were also informed that a female who had been at the party had wandered off in bare feet without a coat. The 18-year-old female was located a short time later by Sandwich officers and transported to the hospital for evaluation.
 
The 19-year-old Sandwich male in charge of the residence was charged with minor in possession of alcohol and keeper of a disorderly house. All others present in the residence will be charged with minor in possession of alcohol. All were released into the custody of their parents.
 
Hearing dates on the charges have not been determined at this time.

Brewster Police make arrests in car B&Es
BREWSTER
- Brewster Police report that on January 1st, officers from Brewster, Harwich and Yarmouth arrested three men in connection with several motor vehicle break ins.  The arrests came at the conclusion of a two week investigation conducted by the Brewster Police with assistance from the Barnstable Police.

Brewster Police arrested Michael Worsman, 22, from Dennis, after a motor vehicle stop which turned up several items of stolen property.  After Mr. Worsman’s arrest, a search warrant was issued for a residence in Yarmouth.  Officers from Yarmouth, Brewster, Chatham and Harwich served the search warrant, where they recovered some additional stolen property.  At the Yarmouth residence, police arrested Kevin Wordell, 22, from Yarmouth.  Also arrested at the house in Yarmouth was, Timothy Evans, 23, from Brewster, on unrelated charges.

Worsman has been charged with B&E to a Motor Vehicle and Larceny over $250.  He was bailed and is scheduled to be arraigned today at Orleans District Court.

Wordell has been charged with B&E Motor Vehicle, Larceny over $250, and Receiving Stolen Property.  He is currently in custody and scheduled to be arraigned this morning at Orleans District Court.

Evans has been charged with Attempt to Commit a Crime (B&E) and Malicious Destruction of Property.  He was taken into custody by Harwich Police and is scheduled to be arraigned this morning in Orleans District Court.

Police are still investigating the group’s involvement in several other unsolved cases in the area.

Elderly woman found wandering after Brewster crash
BREWSTER
- Brewster Police report that on December 31st, just after 9:00 p.m. the Brewster Police received a call about a possible disabled motor vehicle at the intersection of Route 137 and Snow Road.  The arriving officer noted that the vehicle had collided with a stone wall and there was no one with the vehicle. 

The vehicle was registered to Jean Travers, 83, of Brewster.  Out of concern for Ms. Travers well being, Officers began a search of the area.  A K9 from the Barnstable County Sheriffs Office responded to assist and they were able to locate Ms. Travers lying in a wooded area near the crash scene.  It was estimated that Ms. Travers may have been out in the elements for approximately one hour before she was found.

Brewster Fire & Rescue transported her to Cape Cod Hospital to be treated.

Apartment building fire leaves several homeless in Bourne

BOURNE
- A fast moving fire forced several families out into the frigid cold and left them temporarily homeless. Flames were shooting out a doorway at the Canalside Apartments on Scotch Pine Road when firefighters arrived about 11 p.m. Initial reports indicated the fire may have started in a laundry room of the complex nestled alongside the Route 6/Route 3 flyover on the approach to the Sagamore Bridge.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames but smoke filled the multi unit building. All of the occupants escaped safely and no injuries were reported. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents with temporary shelter. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.

Harwich man fatally stabbed in Boston
BOSTON
- A Harwich man was fatally stabbed early New Year's Day in Boston. Tony Spaulding, 21, was stabbed outside a Pratt Street house where a party was going on.

It was Boston's first homicide of 2013.

24-year-old Brian MacDonald was arraigned on murder charges Wednesday in Brighton District Court and held on $500,000 bail.

The motive in the attack is unclear but according to WCVB may have started after Spaulding asked MacDonald to quiet down. Watch the WCVB report here.
