Mashpee 7th graders graduate "GREAT" program

MASHPEE - Barnstable County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Brace (right) and Special Jeff Perry give a graduation certificate and a handshake to 7th graders at the Mashpee Middle School. The assembly marked successful completion of this year’s Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program, which Sheriff Cummings introduced to the Cape 11 months ago. Working closely with Mashpee schools and police, Deputy Brace and youth coordinator Shaun Cahill were able to devote 13 weekly sessions to the students – 133 in all.
GREAT teaches skills to help students avoid gangs, drugs, crime, and their attendant violence. To do that, it emphasizes the importance of decision making, especially when it needs to be made in the face of peer group pressure. Nationally, GREAT has become the preventative program of choice for school-law enforcement collaboration. It has gained traction elsewhere in the country and last year was beginning to make inroads in the Bay State when the Sheriff brought it to Cape Cod.
One 7th grader wrote this in a thank-you letter to Deputy Brace: “(The program) has really changed the way we see life. You have taught us so much on how to stay away from drinking, getting in fights, arguments, and much more.”
