HYANNIS - Barnstable Police report that on Tuesday at approximately 10 p.m., they received a 911 call from a male victim at Covell’s Beach in Centerville stating that he had been robbed at gunpoint in the parking area. Upon arrival at the scene, officers observed the victim to have injuries on his head from being struck with a handgun. The victim stated that during the robbery the suspect, 20-year-old Elton Sanches of West Yarmouth, pulled the trigger of the gun twice while it was pointed at him, however, the gun jammed and the victim was able to run off. The victim was familiar with Sanches and gave a description of the vehicle that the assailant left the area in. The victim was then transported to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.A description of the suspect vehicle was given out, and shortly thereafter a patrol officer spotted a female exiting the grey Saturn and entering a home at 80A Winter Street in Hyannis. Patrol officers surrounded the home and the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Swat Team was called to the scene.
The SWAT Team responded with their Bearcat vehicle and a Barnstable Police negotiator telephoned one of the females that had been in the Saturn at Covell’s beach. She notified the occupants to exit the home. Two males and three females that were carrying 2 infant children in their arms exited the home. One of the females reported that Sanches and his girlfriend, 18 year old Jailee Washington of Sandwich, were still hiding in the home and that Sanches was in possession of the gun from the robbery.
Sanches and Washington finally exited the home after being called out on a loudspeaker from the SWAT Bearcat vehicle. A short time later, the Tokarev semi automatic handgun used in the robbery, along with some 7.62 cal. Pistol ammunition was located hidden in a crawl space in the 80A Winter Street home.

Sheriff's CERT classes start soon
BOURNE - Barnstable County Sheriff James M. Cummings is once again offering public-spirited volunteers a chance to join one of his highly regarded Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT).
To qualify for CERT you must be at least 16-years-old and willing to attend eight weekly training classes. Week one is January 10th and week eight is March 7th. (No class on February 21st.) Meeting nights are Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, located at 1445 Osterville-West Barnstable Road. Residents of all Cape communities are eligible.
CERT responders do not replace but rather supplement professional emergency workers. Said Sheriff Cummings: “They are an important part of this county’s preparedness plan, especially when the professional response has been temporarily overwhelmed or is still being mobilized.
“They are a collective finger in the dike,” Sheriff Cummings concluded, “and that can make a big difference.” Members also assist at road races, festivals, and the like.
CERT follows a national model established 17 years ago by the Los Angeles Fire Department and re-energized by the terrorist strike on 9/11.
The Barnstable County Sheriff’s CERT was among four such teams recognized two months ago by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA’s other choices for the agency’s annual CERT awards went to Newport Beach, California; New York City; West Pierce County Fire and Rescue in Washington State; and Georgetown University CERT in Washington., DC.
There is no charge for classes and seating is limited to 25. The slots always fill quickly and some have already been reserved. If you are 16 or older and interested, check the Sheriff’s website (www.bsheriff.net/cert). You’ll be able to download the paperwork you need from there.
If you’d prefer dealing with someone in person, call Chrystal LaPine at 508-375-6017 or 774-836-7811.
