Yarmouth Police officer gets special thank you
YARMOUTH
-
Yarmouth Police Deputy Chief Steve Xiarhos took a phone call from a young United States Army Soldier Monday afternoon who wanted to thank Officer Melissa Alden for saving his life a few weeks ago in South Yarmouth.

After listening to his amazing story, he asked him to send it to him in writing. This is what he wrote...

Dear Ms. Alden:

I am writing to thank you for saving my life the night of January 7th, 2012.

You responded to a call saying that my life was in danger, as I was reported suicidal by my friend, late that night. You came into the house, ran down stairs where I was, and immediately asked me if I was okay. After making sure I was in no danger to myself, you sat me down and spoke to me, kindly and firmly, but with the demeanor of a mother.

You were so kind to me that night that I am of the firm conviction that you, Patrol Officer Alden, saved my life. I had been struggling with severe back pain, emotional issues that were tearing me apart, and because of your help that night; I am now back on track with my future. I am getting spinal fusions to correct my back, and getting my paperwork to get back in the Army, as soon as possible.

If you had not been so good to me that night, I would not be in the position to sit here and write off this email. I never thought that I would be thanking a Police Officer for helping me survive the odds and have a better outlook on life, but the motherly way, and yet flawless professionalism you handled me with, gives me the distinct desire to thank you, for saving my life.

You are what I believe, defines a Police Officer. A citizen who takes it upon herself to protect the other citizens from harm. I too took an oath; however mine was to protect our great County and our Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

You have given me a new chance on life, a new, better, happier perspective because of something you told me that night, that I will always remember. "You've had hardship in your life, but remember each day is a new chance to make a difference in your life and the lives of others, life isn’t supposed to be fair, but if you put in enough effort to make your life better, life will reward you ten times over".

So here I am Officer, in gratitude to you, sincerely thanking you, thanking you for not only saving my life, but saving my future, giving me the possibility of fulfilling my dream of being a parent, going back into the Army to serve my Country and living to see the sun rise another day.

You are a hero to me, and I am indebted to you for the rest of my life. Thank you.

Sincerely Yours in True Gratitude,

An Under 21 Year Old Town of Yarmouth Resident and United States Army Soldier

P.S. Dear Deputy Chief (Xiarhos),

I will be sure to stay in touch, I am thankful for your kind words of encouragement, I am struggling to be the man I want to be and make the best decisions for myself and all those around me in my situation, but I can only assure you that having support like yours is helping me be that man.

I have made so many serious, life altering decisions to better myself and not fall into the trap of giving up and not being a loser, and I hope that I may wear the uniform of our Great Country with pride again soon so I may honor our town of Yarmouth and the community with the positive role model I know I have the potential to be.

I pray for our Soldiers each and every morning, our Marines, our Sailors and Coasties, our Airmen and all those who lead a life helping others. As I go into surgery in the next two weeks, remember me in your prayers that I may come out ten times stronger, ready and able to go back to being a good citizen, a positive role model and a great leader. Thank you again for speaking with me, and all the best to you and your family.
