Big story: 4-alarm fire tears through Iron House stove company building in Hyannis Flames shoot through the roof of the Iron House building in Hyannis as thick smoke banks down in the street Editors note: move mouse over slide show to reveal controls to stop and start show manually. HYANNIS - A 4-alarm fire tore through the Iron House building at 95 Corporation Street, to the rear of the Cape Cod Mall, in Hyannis early Tuesday morning. A police officer on routine patrol smelled smoke and discovered the fire just after 1 a.m. Flames were through the roof when firefighters arrived minutes later. Blinding smoke choked the street and the neighborhood. Firefighters went into a defensive mode using ladder pipes and large handlines to fight the blaze from outside the building. The Iron House sells fireplaces and coal stoves.
Mutual aid from as far away as Falmouth and Brewster either responded to the scene or covered empty fire stations across the mid and upper Cape. The Red Cross provided rehab for the firefighters. No injuries were reported. Corporation Street will likely be closed for an extended period. Some fire trucks were positioned along Route 28 and Bearse's Way as additional water was pumped into the scene. The State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.
