Gas leak forces evacuation in Chatham
CHATHAM - A gas leak in a Chatham Housing Authority building forced some residents to temporarily evacuate Tuesday evening.

Firefighters were able to secure the leak and ventilate the building at 12 Captain's Landing shortly after the 10 p.m. call.

Units 11 and 12 were both evacauted for a time due to the high levels of gas.

It appeared a new appliance was being installed when the valve was broken off.

National Grid was called to make repairs. 





Several towns battle brush fire in Bourne
BOURNE - Tueday at 1:30 p.m., Bourne and Onset FDs were dispatched to a reported brush fire westbound on Route 25 at milemarker 5. Arriving units found 3 separate fires along the side of the road along a quarter mile stretch.

Additional breakers and tankers from Wareham and Plymouth FDs were called to the scene along with Wareham EMS. Crews were on scene till about 4:30 p.m.

Department of Conservation and Recreation forest fire control all assisted on scene. About 5 acres in total was scorched. The cause is still under investigation. 

Pickup vs pickup in Falmouth


FALMOUTH
 - About 4:15 p.m., at the intersection of Waquoit Highway (Route 28) and Fresh Pond Road, a Dodge Dakota pickup turning onto Waquoit Highway from Fresh Pond struck another Dodge Dakota pickup traveling south on Route 28. An engine from Falmouth Fire Rescue responding to another call was on scene quickly to check the drivers and passengers of both trucks. All involved were found to be uninjured. Falmouth PD were on scene to direct traffic around the trucks and to investigate the crash. Both trucks were in the middle of Route 28 causing significant traffic tie up at a busy time of day. This location is subject to afternoon sunset glare which may have contributed to the crash.

Two-vehicle crash injures one in Hyannis
HYANNIS - At 2:15 pm today there was a crash on South Street by the entrance to the Town of Barnstable municipal building.

According to reports, A Hyundai Santa Fe was rear ended by a Honda coupe.

One person from the Hyundai was taken to CCH by Hyannis rescue.

One injured in Bourne rollover
BOURNE - One person was taken to a hospital for evaluation after a rollover crash in Bourne. Two vehicles collided just before 7 a.m. on State Road at Meetinghouse Road causing one of the vehicles to roll over. The crash is under investigation by Bourne Police.

Man robbed in own driveway
HYANNIS - Police are searching for a man who allegedly robbed another of his medications in his own driveway. Barnstable Police originally rushed to Periwinkle Drive in Hyannis for reports a person had been stabbed around 7:30 p.m. Monday evening. When police arrived they learned the suspect had lunged at the victim with a knife. The victim was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with minor cuts. Police describe the suspect as about 6 feet tall, last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and jeans.

Plea reached in murder of former Provincetown psychic, police dispatcher
POULTNEY, VT - A plea deal has been reached in the November 2008 murder of Linda Wiggin, but the deal must be approved by the judge. Wiggin's body was discovered a week after she was reported missing. Police charged her boyfriend David C. Denny with murder saying he had hit her over the head with a frying pan and tried to stab her. Denny pleaded guilty to second degree murder.

The deal calls for a 22-year sentence which incorporates a separate violation of probation charge. Some family members don't want the judge to accept the deal saying it is too lenient.

Wiggin had been teaching English at Castleton State College. She lived in Provincetown in the 1990s where she was a well known psychic and worked as a summer dispatcher for Provincetown Police.


Man admits guilt in 2008 crime spree
FALMOUTH - A man who went on a crime spree has admitted guilt. Elangwa Shaidi pleaded guilty to charges including Mayhem, and asault and battery on a person over 60 in connection to incidents in June 2008. CWN archives show on June 9th Shaidi crashed a house party on Cottontail Circle. When asked to leave he retrieved a knife and stabbed three people. Fortunately all three recovered. Then on June 28th he broke into a house and tried to rob a 77-year-old woman. The woman suffered minor injuries in a fall while being chased by Shaidi. He was captured after a struggle with police after breaking into a second home. His attorney said alcohol was a factor in the incidents. He was sentenced to 8-10 years in prison

PROVINCETOWN - From Monday February 01, 2010 to Sunday February 07, 2009, the Provincetown Police logged 378 calls for service. There were no arrests.
