Suspect arrested in child pornography case
Video available: Watch Det. Kevin Connolly's report here
Audio available: Listen to WXTK's Matt Pitta's report
HYANNIS - Nearly nine months ago the Massachusetts Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) received a National Center for Missing Exploited Children CyberTipline report which reported the upload of a child pornography to an internet website.  After an extensive investigation by ICAC members from the Massachusetts State Police, the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, and the Barnstable Police Department; a laptop computer belonging to Kevin McNicol, 23, of Hyannis, was seized.  A forensic examination of that computer revealed several videos and images of young females being posed in states of nudity and engaged in sexual acts.  These videos appeared to have been created during webcam chats McNicol was having with the young females.  An attempt to identify the victims has recently produced a named victim that was able to be interviewed regarding this case.  During the victim’s interview she told investigators that 2 months after McNicol's computer had been seized in the search warrant, he had contacted her online and continued his efforts to entice her to take more pictures of herself to send to him.

As a result of the investigation and arrest warrant was issued for McNicol and he was taken into custody in North Weymouth on February 6.  McNicol was taken into custody without incident and was held at the Barnstable Police Headquarters until arraignment this morning.  McNicol was arraigned on charges of posing a child nude and engaged in sexual activity, possession of child pornography, disseminating obscene matter to minors, and videotaping a nude person without their knowledge.  The Barnstable District Court placed a $5,000 bail on McNicol, with several restrictions if bail is made.

Rollover with serious injuries closes Route 132

Rescuers work to extricate a victim of a rollover crash. Note part of a tree under the vehicle and the guide wires of a utility pole  behind it.

Rescuers used air bags and the Jaws of Life to free the victim who was airlifted (right)
WEST BARNSTABLE - A serious rollover crash closed down Route 132 between Route 6 and Route 6A overnight. Two people were in the Cadillac Cimarron which struck a tree and the guide wire of a utility pole between the YMCA and Route 6A before rolling over shortly after midnight. The driver, 22-year-old Ethan Adams of West Barnstable, was trapped by the vehicle. A Centerville engine assisted West Barnstable with extrication which included using the Jaws of Life and air bags to lift up the vehicle. Rescuers called for a MedFlight helicopter to land at Cape Cod Community College where a Hyannis Fire engine was summoned to standby. A passenger was taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries believed to be serious but non life-threatening. Power was turned off in the area while rescuers worked the scene. At one point during extrication the utility pole swung over the roadway as the guide wire let go and wires became draped over a West Barnstable Fire truck. Luckily no rescuers were injured. NStar crews will be working well into the morning replacing the pole. Commuters to Cape Cod Community College should plan on entering Route 132 from the Route 6 side. Barnstable Police are investigating the crash. Adams will be cited for operating to endanger and marked lanes violation.

Stump dump fire causes smoke scare at nursing home
Firefighters also called to chimney fire in Harwich

BREWSTER - A report of smoke in the Pleasant Bay Nursing Home shortly before 3 p.m. sent Brewster, Orleans and Harwich firefighters rushing to the facility at 383 South Orleans Road (Route 39). Firefighters were able to quickly determine the smoke was coming from a nearby stump dump on Freeman's Way where an earlier fire in a pile of debris had apparently rekindled. No injuries were reported at the nursing home. Brewster firefighters called for the DPW to respond with a machine to pull the pile apart so the fire could be completely extinguished. Meanwhile just after 5:30 p.m. Brewster Firefighters responded to assist Harwich at 201 Pleasant Bay Road. The chimney of a woodstove had apparently become blocked with creosote causing smoke to back into the home. The stove was shut down and the situation quickly brought under control.

Barnstable County inmates paint MMA

BOURNE
-
A new coat of paint can really brighten things up, as Ed Gendron (left) would be the first to tell you.  Gendron, a working foreman on the maintenance crew at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Bourne, is joined here by two inmates from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).  The one who agreed to be identified, Mark Press, is at right.  The trio, along with four other BCSO inmates, is busy painting the stairwells and corridors (or ladders and passageways in nautical parlance) inside one of the academy’s dorm buildings.

The six-deck dorm employs nautical terminology and is ship-like after a fashion.  (Example?  Though tough to read here, the signage next to Press reads head instead of rest room.)

Gendron called the inmates’ work effort and product “unbelievable,” adding “we’d never be able to do this without them.  We don’t have even one fulltime painter on staff, and along come six!”  He said a conservative estimate of the donated labor comes to $36,000.  To arrive at that figure, Gendron multiplied the six inmates times the 30 days they’ll wind up working times eight hours per day times $25 per hour.
