Yarmouth Police prevent suicide, arrest deranged man
WEST YARMOUTH – Yarmouth Police have released the details of a harrowing search, intervention, and arrest that occurred on Monday, February 1.

At 1:00 p.m. Monday the Yarmouth Police Department received an alert from the Barnstable District Court that Arthur Ferreira, 42, of Yarmouthport had walked away from the court without permission and was wanted for violating his probation.

Ferreira (photo at right) is familiar to Yarmouth Police due to past involvements and arrests. He had been arrested by the Yarmouth Police Department on June 11, 2007 for assaulting and attacking several Yarmouth Police Officers with a large steak knife during a violent disturbance at his home in Yarmouthport. Ferreira was subsequently convicted on four counts of Assault on a Police Officer while Armed with a Dangerous Weapon and sentenced to prison.

Ferreira’s most recent involvement with the Yarmouth Police occurred this past Saturday morning, January 30, when Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers Kalil Boghdan and Michael Kramer arrested him on an outstanding felony default warrant during a motor vehicle stop on Setucket Road in Yarmouthport.

While being booked at Yarmouth Police Headquarters on Saturday afternoon Ferreira made numerous threats to kill himself and Yarmouth Police Officers, as well as Barnstable District Court Officers. Yarmouth Police Officers transported him under heavy guard to Cape Cod Hospital for psychiatric evaluation and treatment. He was subsequently transported to Bridgewater State Hospital for the weekend with a Monday court appearance.

After learning that Ferreira walked away from the Barnstable District Court on Monday members of the Yarmouth Police patrol force conducted an aggressive search for Ferreira. At approximately 3:11 p.m. Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer Kalil Boghdan intercepted the Ferreira family as they were returning home and notified them of the most recent incident.

Patrol Officer Boghdan escorted them into their residence and conducted a protective sweep of the home for their protection and safety. While conducting the sweep Patrol Officer Boghdan heard a loud bang coming from the finished basement and ran down the stairs and found Ferreira hanging from a beam by electrical extension cord.

Patrol Officer Boghdan withdrew his knife and cut Ferreira down. He then removed the cord from his neck, administered first aid and radioed for assistance. Fellow Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers Andrew O’Malley and K-9 Patrol Officer Peter McClelland arrived as well as Patrol Sergeant Christopher McEachern and members of the Yarmouth Fire Department.

Ferreira spent Monday night under the guard of Yarmouth Police Officers at Cape Cod Hospital and was re-transported to the Barnstable District Court Tuesday morning.
