Truck gas tank fails on Bass River Bridge

WEST DENNIS – Around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, the gas tank on a Ford F150 pickup truck failed as the vehicle travelled eastbound on Route 28 just before the Bass River Bridge. The driver reports he had just filled the tank and was headed home to Dennis. As the vehicle approached the bridge it hit a depression in the road surface. The driver then heard a noise and saw sparks shooting out from the back of the truck. He brought the vehicle to a stop just over the town line into Dennis.
Fire companies from Dennis and Yarmouth responded to the scene to control and clean up the spill. Firefighters placed a spill containment pool under the truck’s tank (photo at right, click to enlarge) to catch the remaining fuel as it leaked out.
A truck was dispatched from the Dennis Department of Public Works with a load of sand to soak up the gasoline. The Dennis Health Department reported to the scene as well.
Early indications are that the gasoline did not flow into Bass River.
Travel on Route 28 over the bridge was reduced to one lane until the vehicle was removed and the scene was cleared around 5:40 p.m.
