Boat catches fire in Provincetown

PROVINCETOWN - A small center console vessel caught fire Thursday morning. The vessel was tied to one of the finger piers at Macmillan Wharf when the fire broke out. Fishermen used a hose to knock down most of the fire which it appeared may have started in electronic equipment in the pilothouse. That area suffered damaged but the vessel remained seaworthy. Harbormaster officials deployed absorbant pads to soak up any fuel that may have spilled. No injuries were reported.

Cape Police support Wounded Warrior Ride
CAPE COD - Next Thursday, September 20, approximately 30 badly wounded young American service men and women from the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will take part in a rehabilitative bicycling ride on Cape Cod and Boston on the latest stop of Wounded Warrior Project's national Soldier Ride.
These brave wounded warriors will be staying in Yarmouth at the Cape Cod Irish Village Motel and will be riding specially adapted bicycles on the Cape Cod Rail Trail on Thursday, Sept. 20th from Dennis to Wellfleet beginning at 8 a.m. and the Shining Sea Bikeway from North Falmouth to Woods Hole on Friday, Sept. 21st starting at 9 a.m. and the public is invited to cheer on the heroes at the beginning of each ride, as well as show their support along the trails.Warriors are fitted for upright, recumbent or hand crank cycles to suit their injuries before setting out on the 3-day trip, which will take them from Cape Cod to Boston, and include whale watching provided by the Dolphin Fleet, as well as lunch provided by the Lobster Pot, both in Provincetown and special Cape Cod dinner at the Skipper Restaurant on South Shore Drive in South Yarmouth. After Friday’s Shining Sea ride, the heroes will be transported to Boston with a special Massachusetts State Police escort for a Red Sox game at Fenway Park on Friday night and their big Soldier Ride in Boston on Saturday.
Members of several Cape Cod Police departments are supporting the ride. Yarmouth Police Deputy Chief of Police Steven Xiarhos, whose son U.S. Marine Corporal Nicholas G. Xiarhos was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009, and Patrol Officer Albert Sprague, whose son U.S. Army Sergeant Christopher Sprague was wounded in combat in Afghanistan in 2011, are committed to establishing Soldier Ride as an annual event on Cape Cod and have joined together with members of Cape Cod AMVET Post 333, the Falmouth Military Support Group, and some very special citizen volunteers including Mary Reardon of Dennis, Kim Hurd of Provincetown, Jerrell Williams of Yarmouthport, and former Islamorada, Florida Mayor Cathi Hill who arranged Soldier Rides in the Florida Keys since 2005 and now lives in Brewster. “A Country is judged on how it treats its Veterans and it critical that these young American Warriors know that Cape Codders appreciate them and welcome them with open arms,” says Deputy Chief Xiarhos.
The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project is to honor and empower wounded warriors. Its purpose is to raise awareness and to enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured men and women aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. The goal of Soldier Ride is to help wounded war veterans gain confidence as they make the transition from rehabilitation back to civilian life. The ride has been held in cities across America since 2004, but this is its first visit to Cape Cod.
