CWN Storm team: Wire down in Falmouth makes for fiery scene, power also out in Orleans An arctic cold front brought gusty winds that caused problems on the Cape:
FALMOUTH - Shortly before 8 p.m., a "wire down" call became a gas-fed fire. Falmouth Fire Rescue was called to the area of 171 Homestead Lane in Falmouth for the report of a "pole" fire that apparently was a wire down due to wind gusts in the area. The sparking wire subsquently ignited an under-street gas line about the time the fire units rolled up to the scene.
NStar was called to cut the power in the area and National Grid responded to turn off the gas flow. The fire was extinguished by 9:20 pm.Occupants of surrounding homes who had been evacuated earlier were able to return to their homes at 9:30.
NStar was able to retore most the power except to the immediate area while National Grid secured the original gas leak and another leak that was detected after the fire was extinguished.
ORLEANS - Meanwhile, in Orleans a tree dragged wires down on Monument Road around 10 p.m. causing a sizable outage that left people in the dark and cold until NStar could make repairs. Photos by C. Eric Tinglof/CWN
