HYANNIS - Over the past three months, Barnstable Police Narcotics Detectives and members of the Bristol County Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit have been conducting a heroin and cocaine distribution investigation targeting reputed New Bedford gang member, 22-year old Aaron Magnett (left). Investigators learned that Magnett was traveling from the New Bedford area to the Cape on a daily basis to distribute heroin and cocaine. During the investigation, Magnett sold heroin to an undercover Detective in Bourne, Hyannis, and Orleans. On Wednesday, Detectives learned that Magnett would be delivering heroin to a customer in Hyannis. Barnstable Detectives, Bristol County Sheriff’s Officers and members of the Cape Cod Regional SWAT Team apprehended Magnett and his female accomplice, Shameka Clement, 28, of New Bedford (right), in a Route 132 parking lot. Investigators seized quantities of heroin and cocaine from Magnett. Clement was found to be in possession of cocaine. Both suspects had the drugs hidden inside their undergarments. A Mashpee Police drug sniffing K-9 assisted in locating the drugs.
Magnett was charged with Possession of Cocaine and Heroin With Intent to Distribute and Conspiracy to Violate the Controlled Substance Act. Clement was charged with Possession of Cocaine With Intent to Distribute and Conspiracy to Violate the Controlled Substance Act. The street value of the drugs seized is approximately $2000. Both suspects were held overnight at the police station on $10,000 bail and arraigned this morning in Barnstable District Court. Magnett will also be facing two counts of Distribution of Class A/Heroin in Orleans and Falmouth District Court.
Both Clement and Magnett are reputed New Bedford gang members (United Front gang) with extensive criminal records involving drugs and firearm charges. Clement is currently on supervised release from Boston Federal Court stemming from a 2010 conviction for Distribution of Cocaine. Magnett is currently on New Bedford District Court probation. Both suspects were arrested in a 2009 federal gang investigation in Bristol County.

Toyota careens through intersection and strikes tree
WEST DENNIS - Around 10:30 a.m. Thursday a woman lost control of her Toyota Camry as she was making a left turn onto Route 28 from School Street in West Dennis. According to reports at the scene, the woman said her accelerator jammed as she approached the stop sign at the intersection and she could not stop.The vehicle careened through the intersection and left the roadway, striking a fence and demolishing a signpost in front of West Bend Music at 314 Main Street (Route 28) before it struck a tree.
The woman, traveling alone, was able to extricate herself from the vehicle whose airbags had deployed.
A local business owner provided her with a chair and she stayed seated while Dennis rescue personnel examined her. She was fitted with a neck brace, placed on a stretcher and transported to Cape Cod Hospital with unknown injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.
Dennis Police are investigating the incident.

Falmouth Police hand water superindent probe to court
FALMOUTH - Falmouth Police say they have conducted an intensive investigation into an incident that reportedly occurred at the Falmouth Water Treatment Facility on January 2nd. The incident allegedly involved criminal activity on the part of Water Superintendent William Chapman. In a fax statement, police say they have completed the investigation and turned over the findings to Falmouth District Court for a show-cause hearing. That hearing will decide if any charges are filed.
Arrow shot through Marstons Mills home
MARSTONS MILLS - An arrow was reportedly shot into a Barberry Lane home early Thursday morning. No one was hit but a flat scree TV was destroyed. The homeowner reportedly told police they think a neighbor dispute let to the incident. Barnstable Police are investigating.
Pedestrian struck by alleged drunk driver in Sandwich
SANDWICH - A woman was struck by a car in Sandwich just after 5 a.m. It happened on Great Hills Road by the Lawrence Pond Market. The victim Ashley Katzanback, 29, of Mashpee, was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Witnesses in a passing vehicle acted when they saw what happened. A passenger got out to render first aid while the driver followed the vehicle a short distance until it stopped. The driver Stephanie M. Jagminas, 26, of Mashpee was arrested by Sandwich Police for operating under the influence of liquor (2nd offense) operating to endanger and leaving the scene of personal injury, Police say Katzanback who was jogging was wearing a yellow vest over her jogging suit and an arm band with blinking lights on it.
Wellfleet joins Sheriff's 911
WELLFLEET - Starting Wednesday, emergency “911” calls to Wellfleet will be handled by the Sheriff’s Office – not locally but at the regional location in Bourne. The emergency communications center there is already handling the job for the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) and six other Cape Cod communities.
By the end of February, Wellfleet will also be relying on Sheriff’s telecommunicators to handle its fire and emergency medical service calls. They do that now for MMR, four Cape municipalities and two fire districts. (The recipients of each service level are listed alphabetically as an addendum to this news release. You will see a partial overlap.)
This trend, observes Sheriff James M. Cummings, comes on the heels of a just-released independent study highlighting the benefits of regionalized versus strictly local emergency dispatch. The $135,000 report, written by Intertech Associates out of New Jersey, concludes that “financial justification for a regional dispatch model is overwhelming for Barnstable County.” Annual savings are pegged at between $4½ million and $5.8 million, the report concludes, depending on the center’s precise configuration.
“To be honest,” said the Sheriff, “no one anticipated the rapid growth we’ve experienced these past few years. And I think this tilt toward increased regionalization is only going to accelerate. We’re met with state agencies, state legislators, and the lieutenant governor in our efforts to address the issue. Those meetings will continue.”
The Sheriff’s Office has a long historical interest in emergency communications on Cape Cod. It was the first to explore police radio’s future in Barnstable County (1933), the first to actually operate a “police broadcasting radio system” (1938), and unveiled the state’s first Centralized Medical Emergency Dispatch System (1973).
Then, five years ago, Sheriff Cummings moved the whole operation -- “911,” fire mutual aid, emergency medical services, HazMat, regional emergency management, and the rest -- to its present location at the Massachusetts Military Reservation fire station in Bourne.
Inside are eight multi-functioning dispatch positions. Each has six computer screens in addition to two tools – computer-aided dispatch and mapping – that are invaluable to system users. The Sheriff’s Office even has a mobile van that bristles with high-tech gadgetry and can replace an embedded municipal site should one be disabled.
Emergency communications are well suited for regionalization, Sheriff Cummings noted, because over-the-counter exchanges are not standard operation procedures. “People aren’t travelling somewhere to brick-and-mortar locations. They conduct business by picking up the phone. So the inconvenience of a long drive never comes into play.”
