BOURNE - A pickup truck driver allegedly struck the Ocean State Job Lot building in Buzzards Bay and left the scene Thursday evening. Wareham Police stopped the suspect vehicle and took the driver in custody. Further details were not immediately available.
Arrest made in pharmacy break in and drug larceny
HYANNIS - During the past two weeks, Barnstable and Yarmouth Detectives have been investigating a B&E into the Apothecare Pharmacy located at 205 West Main St in Hyannis. The B&E occurred late at night on February 13th during a major winter storm. The thieves were able to steal approximately 18,000 pills from the pharmacy. The majority of the prescription narcotics were pain killers such as oxycodone and oxycontin. The street value of the stolen narcotics is approximately $500,000. The investigation resulted in the identification of a suspect, 25-year-old Ronald Kimball Jr. in the pharmacy B&E. Detectives also identified Kimball Jr. as a prime suspect in two other incidents/thefts that occurred in Holliston, MA on February 24th and Quechee, VT on February 20th. The Holliston, MA incident involved the theft of a vehicle that contained a large quantity of antiques. The vehicle was stolen from an antique show held over the past weekend at the Holliston, MA high school. In this case, the suspects stole the vehicle while the owner was loading several hundred items purchased at the show into the vehicle. The Quechee, VT incident involved a late night B&E into a jewelry store at the Quechee Antique Mall. In this case, the thieves stole thousands of dollars in gold and diamond jewelry.
Wednesday, Barnstable Detectives obtained search warrants for Kimball Jr’s residence located at 9 Rosetta Lane in West Yarmouth as well as a storage container at the Dennis Mini Storage on Hokum Rock Road in Dennis. Barnstable, Yarmouth and Dennis Detectives served the warrants yesterday afternoon and recovered thousands of pills from the pharmacy in the storage container and in Kimball Jr’s residence. Detectives also recovered a gold and diamond ring taken in the VT theft in Kimball Jr’s residence. It is likely that Kimball Jr and other suspects will face additional charges in Holliston and Quechee.
Kimball Jr. was placed under arrest and charged with the following offenses: Breaking and Entering Nighttime W/Intent to Commit a Felony and Larceny in a Building (Apothecare pharmacy), Trafficking Oxycodone, 2 counts of Possession of a Class B substance (Dilaudid and Methadone) W/Intent to Distribute, Possession of a Class C substance (Hydrocodone) W/Intent to Distribute, and Receiving Stolen Property Over $250 (gold/diamond ring from VT). Kimball Jr was held overnight at the Barnstable Police station and was arraigned in Barnstable District Court Friday morning. Bail was set at $25,000 following the arraignment.

8 arrested in Hyannis area warrant sweep
The purpose of the “warrant sweep” was to attempt to locate and arrest people with outstanding felony warrants, violent crime warrants, drug warrants, default warrants and probation violation. The Barnstable SCU assisted the Mass State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section in planning the operation. All (8) arrests were made without serious incident. The arrestees were transported to Barnstable Police Department to be processed. They were then brought over to Barnstable District Court and arraigned. Many of the warrants were for failure to appear in court or probation violation relating to a previous criminal conviction.

This is not the first time BPD has teamed up with the Mass State Police for a “warrant sweep”. The last operation was conducted on February 17th. It is also certain another sweep will be organized in the future. In this warrant sweep, the goal of making eight people appear in court to answer the outstanding warrants was achieved.

TRURO - A car fire closed Route 6 for a time late Wednesday evening in Truro. The driver reportedly told officials he smelled smoke and pulled over just south of the Pamet Roads exit. Before he knew it the Audi sedan was fully involved. Firefighters knocked down the fire and a tow truck removed the vehicle. The driver was not injured. A mechanical failure is suspected of sparking the fire.

Sheriff's CERT classes begin in mid-March
BOURNE - Barnstable County Sheriff James M. Cummings is once again offering public-spirited volunteers a chance to join one of his highly regarded Community Emergency Response Teams.To qualify for CERT you must be at least 16-years-old and willing to attend eight weekly training classes. Week one is March 14th and week eight is May 2nd. Meeting nights are consecutive Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, located at 1445 Osterville-West Barnstable Road. Residents of all Cape communities are eligible.
CERT responders do not replace but rather supplement professional emergency workers. Said Sheriff Cummings: “They are an invaluable piece of the county’s preparedness plan, especially when the professional response has been temporarily overwhelmed or is still being mobilized.”
CERT’s most recent activation was last month during the Blizzard of 2013. Members helped the county’s emergency activation run smoothly during the storm. Members also assist at road races, festivals, and other non-emergency events.
CERT follows a national model established in the mid 1990s by the Los Angeles Fire Department. And re-energized by the terrorist strike on 9/11.
The Barnstable County Sheriff’s CERT was one of four such teams recognized a year and a half ago by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA’s other choices for the agency’s 2011 CERT awards were Newport Beach, California; New York City; West Pierce County Fire and Rescue in Washington State; and Georgetown University CERT in Washington, DC.
There is no charge for classes and seating is limited to 25. The slots always fill quickly and some have already been reserved. If you are 16 or older and interested, check the Sheriff’s website (www.bsheriff.net/cert). You’ll be able to download the paperwork you need from there.
