Alert citizens, police team up to nail burglar
YARMOUTH - Yarmouth Police credit alert citizens with helping them nail an alleged burglar. Police say Matthew Robert Betts, 32, of South Yarmouth was spotted at 6:38 a.m. this morning by two alert citizens walking down Highbank Road carrying a large flat screen television. Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers Michael Wells, John Lanata, Jr., and Nicholas Giammarco arrived in the area and encountered the suspect. The suspect initially stated he had just purchased the TV from someone in a truck at a nearby gas station.
Further on-scene investigation determined that the suspect had given police a false name and the officers determined his true identity and placed him under arrest for an outstanding warrant. The suspect was transported to Yarmouth Police Headquarters where he was interviewed by Detective Sergeant Charles Peterson.
The interview led to the determination that the suspect had lied about purchasing the TV and that he had actually broken into an unoccupied motel room at a South Yarmouth motel and stolen the TV which he then planned on selling on Craig's list.
The suspect was subsequently transported to Barnstable District Court where he was arraigned on charges of breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony, larceny over $250 and the defauly warrant.
The Yarmouth Police Department commends the assistance of the alert citizens and their willingness to take quick and decisive action as well as all of the Police Officers involved in this successful investigation.
