Feature story: Fourth of July in Provincetown
Editors note: For the first time in many years your editor was not on official duty somewhere. So I hit the street with my "lens". What follows is a brief capsule of the night's events in Provincetown.
PROVINCETOWN - At long last some decent weather arrived just in time for the Fourth of July. Budget concerns threatened to nix the fireworks show but the business community stepped up and a spectacular fireworks show went off without a hitch at 9 p.m.

Fourth of July in Provincetown means an estimated 60,000 people cramming into the Cape-tip. It's an arrangement that hasn't worked well in the past. In 2005 a near riot broke out as large groups of young people congregated along Commercial Street. Organizers rethought the process and for the past few years a unified response from local, county and state officers along with the prestaging of extra ambulances to handle medical concerns have led to a much smoother event. One of the major changes that may deserve much of the credit may be the decision to bring in the Plymouth County Sheriff' Department's mounted unit.

The horse patrol works extremely well in keeping the crowd moving and avoiding the congregations that led to past trouble.

This young man at right, identified as 18-year-old Christopher McEnaney of Orleans, reportedly made the mistake of punching one of the horses and then allegedly compounded that mistake by resisting arrest.

He was charged with assault on a police horse and resisting arrest.

The most serious incident of the night reportedly occurred here in the parking lot of the Stop and Shop on Shankpainter Road around 10:15 p.m.

A person was reportedly attacked and suffered several minor puncture wounds to the back.

He was taken to Cape Cod Hospital.

Police are still searching for suspects.

Police had a zero tolerance for alcohol misuse.

Three underage people found that out the hard way when they were arrested for being in possession of alcohol (note case of beer on trunk of car).

CWN has protected their identity until we can confirm if any of them may be juveniles.

Shortly before 1 a.m. the hot spot seemed to be outside a local bar at Commercial Street and Standish Street.

Four people were reportedly arrested in the skirmish on the left and a short time later two more were arrested in the scene on right. in the right photo the second subject is on the ground just to the left of the parked bicycle.
By 3 a.m. Police were still busy with an incident where a subject was reportedly "jumped" just off Commercial Street downtown. He was evaluated by EMTs. Police are searching for suspects.

Provincetown Police report a total 14 arrests, most for disorderly conduct. Several other people were placed in protective custody for public drunkness.

Police arrest drunken boater with 5 OUIs
WEST YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Police Department reports that on Saturday at 7:50 p.m. Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources officers Edward Tierney and Steven Raneo stopped a boat that had intruded into the special Firework Display Area Security Zone in the Lewis Bay area of West Yarmouth.

Both officers met with the operator of the vessel, Jeffrey A. Daluz (photo at right), 53, of Hyannis, and observed several signs of intoxication and impairment. The operator was interviewed and given a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and transported to the public docking area at Englewood Beach in West Yarmouth where Yarmouth Police Patrol Sergeant John K. Fallon and Yarmouth Police Patrol Investigator Christopher Van Ness took custody of the operator and transported him to Yarmouth Police Headquarters under arrest for Boating Under the Influence.

At Yarmouth Police Headquarters a record check of Daluz revealed an extensive history of Operating under the Influence in Massachusetts including at least 7 prior arrests for OUI liquor and 5 convictions. It was also determined that the suspect had his Massachusetts operator’s license revoked for life.

The suspect is currently being held at Yarmouth Police Headquarters in West Yarmouth on $5,000 cash bail and is scheduled for arraignment in the Barnstable District Court on Monday, July 6, 2009, charged with Felony Boating OUI Liquor 5th Offense (Highest OUI Charge Recognized in Massachusetts).

His boat -- a 22-foot center console Aqua Sport -- has been seized under the provisions of Melanie Law and is currently being held at Yarmouth Police Headquarters pending forfeiture proceedings.
