Sunfish washes up in Provincetown

PROVINCETOWN
- A pelican (see story below), sea turtles, now a sunfish is the latest marine specimen to make an unplanned visit to the Cape-tip. The large sunfish was discovered on a bayside beach in the far east end of Provincetown Sunday morning. Marine experts were dealing with another sunfish stranding further up the Cape. Volunteers tried to keep the animal alive by pouring water on it and in its mouth and over its gills. Under the direction of the experts the volunteers tried to devise a plan to get the sunfish back in the water but the tide was continuing to go out. It also appeared the sunfish had suffered some injuries. Sadly the sunfish could not be saved.

Provincetown pelican on the mend

PROVINCETOWN
- We have an update on the pelican rescued at MacMillan Wharf November 30th. Animal Control Officer Ruth Anne Cowing tells CWN the bird is on the mend at the Wildcare facility. Workers there contructed a small "pond" for the pelican which has developed a healthy appetite for herring. Officials believe the pelican may have been blown off course by Hurricane Sandy and even the nor'easter that followed. Wildcare hopes to raise funds to transport the bird south for rerelease into the wild.
