Yarmouth Police tie one on for safety
YARMOUTH
This is the time of year when more people are on the roads and incidents of drunk and impaired driving increase. That’s why Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s annual Tie One On For Safety campaign, now in its 26th year, encourages people to tie a red ribbon on their car, or attach a red ribbon magnet or window decal in a visible place on the vehicle, in an effort to remind everyone to drive safe, sober and buckled up.

Tie One On For Safety targets the Christmas and New Year holiday season because it is the busiest time of year on most social calendars. With lots of holiday parties and events, and lots of glasses being raised for toasts, the risk for impaired driving is especially high at this time of year.

The red ribbon, tied to a vehicle antenna, is a reminder of the importance of always driving sober.
Beginning this past Tuesday, all Yarmouth Police Department marked vehicles are displaying the MADD red ribbon in support of MADD Massachusetts.

MADD red ribbons, magnets, and window decals are available free of charge in the front lobby anytime at Yarmouth Police Headquarters located on Higgins Crowell Road in West Yarmouth next to Mattacheese Middle School. Display your red ribbon and help us win the battle against drunk driving.

Drunken Driving Statistics

Alcohol-impaired driving is the most frequently committed violent crime in the U.S.
On average someone is killed by a drunk driver every 40 minutes.
Each year, approximately half a million people are injured in crashes where police reported that alcohol was present—an average of one person injured approximately every minute.
