World War II ordnance safely detonated

WEST DENNIS
– The long journey of a piece of naval ordnance that started in Hawaii at the close of World War II ended abruptly Monday afternoon in a flash, bang and spray of beach sand in West Dennis.

The end game began at approximately 3 p.m. Monday afternoon when Dennis police and fire personnel responded to a home in West Dennis for a report of an explosive device found in a shed on the property (left photo at top). The shell was reportedly a souvenir brought back from the Pacific by a Navy veteran after World War II. Police cordoned off the area and evacuated a nearby residence.

A State Police bomb technician arrived on scene around 4:25 p.m. and determined the shell was a live round. He transported the shell to West Dennis Beach where he was joined by a second technician. With the assistance of Dennis firefighters and a nearby landscaping crew collecting seaweed with a Bobcat excavator, they dug a hole in the beach behind a large sand dune. After placing the shell in the hole they rigged it with an explosive charge (photo at right, click to enlarge).
After the area was cleared, the shell was safely detonated around 5:18 p.m. (right photo at top, video).

Careless cigarette disposal causes small fire

DENNISPORT
– Around 2:15 p.m. Monday Dennis and Harwich firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire at 58 Center Street, an apartment building in Dennisport.

Upon arrival, they found a small fire in an outside wall.

After extinguishing the fire, firefighters determined that cigarettes thrown out a front window had ignited mulch bordering the foundation. The flames then spread into the wall.

According to Dennis Fire Captain Robert Brown, the extremely dry winter has increased the combustibility of vegetation and landscape materials.

The scene was cleared shortly before 3 p.m. There were no reported injuries.
