NStar crews were called to restore service.

Dennis Police receive accreditation status from state

DENNIS
- Dennis Police Chief Mike Whalen, Captain William Monahan and Town Administrator Rick White attended the Massachusetts Police Accreditation meeting Thursday where the Department was awarded Accredited status.

The award reflects the Department’s efforts to establish policies and procedures that meet best business practices in the Law Enforcement profession and is based on a review of over 350 standards by 3 outside assessors during an on-site review in  September of 2011.

Chief Whalen thanked Captain Monahan and Administrative Assistant Cheryl Wilson for the preparation that went into the review in September. “But the true essence of the process is more than just this award”, Whalen said.  This was truly a Department- wide process that required all of the staff to provide their input and expertise.  Each Department directive was reviewed by the people responsible for implementing the process and there was quite a bit of editing and changing along the way.  As a result, the Department has developed a set of policies and procedures that reflect the current “Best Practices” in every area of policing including “Use of Force”; Administrative Procedures; Personnel Policies; and Emergency Management to name a few.

In addition to the Department staff, Whalen thanked the Town Administrator and Board of Selectmen for their support in the process.  “It helps to have a Town Administrator who understands the importance of this process”, Whalen said during his comments to the Commission.

While today marks a milestone for the Department it is not the end.  The Accreditation Commission requires accredited agencies to submit to a review every 3 years to maintain their accredited status.  In addition, the Department is working towards a review by the International Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).  That review is expected to occur in September 2012.

For further information concerning the Accreditation process please contact Captain William Monahan at (774) 352-1452 or Chief Whalen.
