Blaze rips through West Dennis Barn

WEST DENNIS - Shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday, the Dennis Fire Department received reports of the smell of smoke in the Church Street area of West Dennis.
A Dennis ambulance returning to headquarters from Cape Cod Hospital was in the area and diverted to investigate. As the ambulance crew proceeded down Church Street they encountered a heavy smoke condition and, in a matter of moments, discovered an outbuilding ablaze behind 16 Aunt Julia Ann’s Road. The fire scene was about 300 feet from the intersection of Church Street and Cove Road and approximately one-third of a mile from Route 28.
Flames spread quickly through the old structure, best described as a barn, and the first engine company on scene quickly exhausted the engine’s onboard water supply. After laying 300 feet of line to the nearest hydrant, companies were able to battle the blaze in earnest.
About 20 minutes later, the ferocious fire, whipped by north winds gusting over 20 mph, was knocked down. Most of the barn’s roof collapsed and the building appeared a total loss.
An old car, probably dating from the 1960s, was stored in the barn and heavily damaged. Reports at the scene indicated that ammunition was also stored in the barn.
Firefighters from Yarmouth responded to the scene while mutual aid companies from Brewster and Harwich covered Dennis stations 1 and 2.
There were no reported injuries and the rambling two-story house that stands on the property was unaffected by the fire.
After a lengthy mop-up operation, the last crew cleared the scene around 11:40 p.m.
The cause of the blaze is not known at this time. The Dennis Fire Department is investigating.
