Mashpee Police join Street Crimes Unit
BARNSTABLEThe Barnstable Street Crime Unit (SCU) went into operation in May of 2011.  During the first three months of 2011, the Barnstable Police Department responded to multiple shootings.  The suspects and victims were well known to Cape Cod Law Enforcement.  During the previous year, the Barnstable Police Department also dealt with multiple stabbings, shootings, and assaults in the Main Street, Hyannis area.  The SCU was formed to combat those issues.  Analyses of crime statistics showed a small number of individuals were responsible for a large amount of the crimes.  It also showed the people involved were not just from Hyannis.  They lived outside of Barnstable in surrounding Cape Cod communities.  It was important the makeup of the SCU be multi jurisdictional.  SCU was created not to simply displace the criminal element from Hyannis but rather eradicate it where ever it was.

The original SCU was comprised of four members of the Barnstable Police Department, one Massachusetts State Trooper, two Barnstable County Deputy Sheriffs, and one Yarmouth Police Officer.  The overall supervision of the SCU is under the direction of a Barnstable Police Department Supervisor.  A Massachusetts State Police Sergeant is currently assigned to the SCU.  The unit works in unmarked police vehicle and members dress in plain clothes.  The main focus is deterring crimes of violence and gang activity.  A stated goal is to suppress “open air” narcotics distribution.  Another goal was to address disorderly conduct and acts of vandalism.  From May of 2011 to present the SCU has made over 1000 arrests.  Crimes of violence in Barnstable and Yarmouth have dramatically been reduced.

Recognizing the transient nature of the criminal element the SCU encounter it became obvious that adding the Mashpee Police Department would be a benefit to the Towns of Barnstable, Yarmouth, and Mashpee.  In early January, Mashpee Police Chief Rodney Collins met with the Barnstable Street Crime Unit Lt John Murphy.  Chief Collins welcomed the idea of Mashpee Police Department joining the SCU.  He immediately committed to assigning a Mashpee Police Officer full time to the SCU.  The addition of the Mashpee Police Department will make the unit even stronger.  On February 1st, 2013, Mashpee Police Officer Michael Assad will be reporting for duty as a member of the SCU.
