The lawmakers made the request to Todd Zinser, inspector general of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Zinser recently found mismanagement in the federal fishery law enforcement office after years of complaints by fishermen.
Frank and Tierney cited a recent independent report that found a lack of accountability among federal rule makers and a need to improve confidence in fishery science.
They said Zinser's assistance was needed to make sure fishery law was being carried out fairly, and called the requested investigation "vital for our fishing industry."
