7/29 (Sandwich) The state Office of Campaign and Political Finance has ruled that former Sandwich School Superintendent Mary Ellen Johnson violated campaign finance laws this past spring

July 29, 2011 (SANDWICH) The state Office of Campaign and Political Finance has ruled that former Sandwich School Superintendent Mary Ellen Johnson violated campaign finance laws this past spring. Director Michael Sullivan says Johnson failed to comply with the law when she used the school’s reverse notification system to advocate for a ballot question.

The message discussed the question requesting approval for school roof repairs and encouraged residents to support the measure.

The ethics panel says it’s settled state law that school officials can use an automated system to remind residents to vote – but can’t be used to advocate a position.

The state says Johnson will not face any penalties as she is no longer employed by the school district.
